Previous versions
Adobe has launched Substance 3D Painter 8.3 – an update to the 3D painting software that focuses on improving baking workflows.
The program introduces a new baking mode replacing the old baking window. You can draw an implicit baking cage, which will react to the Max Frontal Distance setting in real time. Moreover, a high-poly mesh can now be displayed in the viewport, showing in red areas missed by the cage without the need to bake first.
Another new feature is highlighting hard edges without UV seams, which should protect your project from artifacts.
As for other changes, Universal Scene Definition (USD) files can now be imported into Substance 3D Painter with a dedicated scope and variant selector, as well as subdivisions and animation.
When exporting textures, a USD file can be generated as a new file or a layer, making it easy to integrate into your workflow.
The new version also introduces improved physical size support for Substance materials. They can now be used with UV projection in fill layers, with the size of the UV computed automatically based on the average size of the triangles from UV unwrapping. You can choose additional settings added to use physical size by default with materials.
