"I feel like my game just happens to be the current face of this beautiful and passionate corner of the industry."

With five nominations for this year’s The Game Awards, including the highly sought-after Game of the Year award, the roguelike deck builder Balatro is going to wrap up a particularly fruitful year. And to the developer LocalThunk, it is a moment of joy that is a bit overwhelming for him to take alone.
In a heartfelt post on the Balatro subreddit, the developer expressed deep gratitude for the support and kindness provided by the indie game community over the past year. He described himself as the “lucky one” with the nominations and believed they should have been rewarded to the whole indie community.
“I feel uncomfortable treating the nominations and awards for Balatro as ‘my’ awards or nominations because I feel like my game just happens to be the current face of this beautiful and passionate corner of the industry. I just happen to be the lucky one to be propped up.”
“Go support an indie!!” sounds like a shoutout from the very bottom of his heart. It’s definitely not his responsibility, but he took this chance to share a list of games made by great people that he wishes players could give them a try.

Besides the nomination for Game of the Year, Balatro was also nominated for Best Mobile Game, Best Independent Game, Best Debut Indie, and Best Game Direction. No wonder LocalThunk has called it a “crazy crazy day” on Bluesky.
