After Launching a Major Disney IP, Another Indie Studio Faces Layoffs

Bithell Games had to lay off 11 employees, the majority of their full-time staff.

Mike Bithell, head of the UK-based studio Bithell Games, has announced that the studio was unable to secure funding for a new large-scale project. As a result, the company had to lay off 11 employees, which represents the majority of their full-time staff.

"It became clear leading up to the release of our most recent game that we were not immune to the challenges faced by many game development teams seeking funding partners in 2024 and 2025. We’ve fortunately been able to communicate these challenges ahead of time, and work with affected staff to ease departures as much as possible via severance packages," wrote Bithell.

The manager noted that they had to say goodbye to "an incredible team of exceptionally talented people." He added that "anyone among those affected would be a great addition to your studio."

The layoffs will not impact support for previously released titles. Bithell Games will continue maintaining those games.

One of the affected is Senior Animator Rich Stubbs. "Like a lot of the industry now, unfortunately I have been made redundant. Working at Bithell Games has been a genuinely great ride, being the sole animator on a Disney project is a badge of honour I will wear with an incredible amount of pride," wrote Stubbs. "Big love and respect to the studio and everyone I've worked with over the years."

The studio is best known for the release of Tron: Catalyst, as well as earlier titles such as the narrative platformer Thomas Was Alone, the cyberpunk stealth action game Volume, and the strategic sci-fi title The Banished Vault.
