Foreshadowing is a powerful thing that can give you goosebumps once you've figured it out. Alan Wake 2 is full of secrets, and one of them is hiding in plain sight – or rather, in its audio cues.
The X/Twitter user WillieTPJ noted (via PC Gamer) that you can figure out Scratch's whereabouts by listening to the sounds when hovering over the prompts around Alan's photo in the Mind Place. You will hear the noises of the Dark Presence, hinting at Scratch living inside Alan.
If this is not enough to convince you, Remedy Entertainment's senior sound designer Josh Adam Bell confirmed the theory. "Finally someone noticed," he commented. "This was 100% on purpose."
Using sound to tease players is not an Alan Wake 2-exclusive deal, of course, and you can find similar moves in Baldur's Gate 3, for example. So next time you play any game, pay attention to what you hear as much as to what's on the screen. Who knows, maybe an important realization will come earlier this way.
