The US tops the list both in terms of the number of publishers and the revenue they generate.
Video Game Insights recently released a report on video game publishers on Steam exploring the number of publishers in a certain country and the revenue they generate. The research covers 2,337 Steam publishers that generate 95% of revenue.
VG Insights notes that the majority of publishers are located in the US – they represent almost a quarter of the total number of game publishers. They are followed by the UK (10%), and Canada and Germany share the third place with 7%. The vast majority of game publishers come from North America or Europe, and the only country in this top ten list is Japan with 3% of publishers coming from this country.
In terms of revenue, the list of top ten game publishers looks a little different, however, the US again takes the first place with 69 of the top 250 earning Steam publishers being from there. Next comes the UK with 28 publishers, and Japan enters the third place with 20 publishers, followed by China with 18 of the top 250 publishers.
The report reads that these 250 largest publishers accounted for 91% of all revenue generated on Steam during the past year. The leading company here was Bandai Namco which made over $800 million on the platform in the last 365 days. This revenue was mostly driven by the Elden Ring sales.
The research also showed that 90% of Steam publisher revenue comes from 8 major markets: the USA, Japan, the UK, France, Sweden, Canada, Poland, and China, with US publishers accounting for 39% of all Steam revenue.
