Amazon Fires 16,000, Allegedly Including Amazon Game Studios Director
Most of the US-based workers will be given three months to find a new role within Amazon.
As stated by Amazon's Beth Galetti, the layoffs come as part of the corporation's previously-outlined strategy, aimed at strengthening Amazon by cutting layers, increasing ownership, and eliminating unnecessary bureaucracy.
Most of the impacted workers – provided they are based in the US – will be given 90 days to find a new role within the company itself, the statement continues, with Amazon pledging to "provide transition support including severance pay, outplacement services, health insurance benefits (as applicable), and more" for those unable to secure themselves a new position.
Shortly after the firings were announced, Bloomberg's Jason Schreier chimed in over on Bluesky, claiming that Christoph Hartmann – the director of Amazon Game Studios and co-founder of video game publisher 2K – would also be leaving the company, with the journalist attributing his exit to Amazon's "retreat from the PC and console video-game space in favor of its cloud gaming service Luna."
As of this writing, Hartmann himself has not commented publicly on the situation, making it unclear whether his departure was voluntary or the result of termination. It also remains unconfirmed whether he was affected by the layoffs at all, with Schreier currently being the only source making that claim.
