AMD Is Considering Radeon Super Resolution Support on Older GPUs

AMD's Ryzen 6000 APUs and gaming laptop GPUs will be the first in line to test the possibility of implementing RSR support.

AMD is currently exploring the possibility of implementing support for Radeon Super Resolution technology on more GPUs. The company claims that in the Q2 of 2022, the RSR feature should be available on Ryzen 6000-series APUs with RDNA iGPUs and later on gaming laptops based on Radeon graphics cards.

"Our next step is with the Ryzen 6000 RDNA products," AMD's director of software management Glen Matthews stated. "And then after that will be support for hybrid solutions, so where you have Ryzen 6000 with a Radeon product added in… a discrete solution in your laptop".

AMD noted that it will start testing RSR on other graphics cards only after it collects and researches data on how the feature performs on more powerful APUs. Although it is still unclear, which adapters will be the first to be tested.

"We are evaluating other solutions after that. The reason we've taken that process is both a combination of what we see from our users in terms of the displays that they use and then also where we see most value to our users. And we prioritize in that order,” said Matthews.

Radeon Super Resolution is a software-based upscaling technology that is powered by FidelityFX Super Resolution 1.0 algorithms. The function upscales the image from a lower resolution to the native screen resolution, while retaining detail. At the same time, the technology is implemented at the graphics driver level, due to which it doesn't require developers to pre-bake support into their games. AMD also reported that in some cases, the use of RSR increases the frame rate by up to three times.
