The developer empathized with his fans' disappointment and frustration but urged everyone to move on.
Developer American McGee has expressed his desire for people to refrain from inquiring about Alice in the future.
In early April, McGee stated that Electronic Arts had declined to fund the third installment of Alice, titled Asylum, and refused to explore the possibility of licensing options which is why the project came to an end. Along with this, the developer also announced that he was leaving the gaming industry.
A few days later, McGee hosted a Q&A session on the project's Patreon page where he explicitly mentioned that he did not wish to discuss Alice any further, including both the third installment and the franchise as a whole.
"If you want to do something with the IP, you are free to do that – just like you are with all other IPs – but you get into trouble when you start trying to sell the stuff you create. Additional questions on this stuff should be directed at EA," McGee said. "I really want some space from Alice and questions related to it."
The developer acknowledged that he shared the same feelings of disappointment and frustration as many of his fans, but he believed it was time for both himself and his followers to move on from the matter.
"I just want to restate that I understand how difficult this is for many of you. I am feeling the same pain and anger as many of you. And I understand that in situations like these, we often ask ourselves 'what can we do' or 'what could we have done differently' in order to change the outcome. It's tough to admit right now but ultimately, we're going to need to accept that this decision and the situation, in general, is out of our control."
American McGee revealed the complete narrative for Alice: Asylum, which is the third installment of Mysterious Studios' dark and eerie adaptation of Alice in Wonderland, in August 2021. This project followed the release of Alice: Madness Returns in 2011 and was created using McGee's distinct "crowd design process," with input from over 3000 Patreon supporters.
