Anime Director Yūji Yanase Passed Away at the Age of 59
He had most recently been directing two TV anime series airing in summer 2026: The World's Strongest Rearguard and The Insipid Prince's Furtive Grab for the Throne.
Yūji Yanase, a renowned Japanese anime director, passed away on August 22, 2026, at the age of 59 due to myocardial infarction. He had worked in the industry for over 30 years and had recently been directing two TV anime series broadcasting in summer 2026: The World's Strongest Rearguard and The Insipid Prince's Furtive Grab for the Throne.
The director was on the team at the Japanese animation studio MAHO FILM. The studio's president and CEO Junji Murata took to X/Twitter and confirmed the news on Wednesday. According to Murata, Yanase's family held a private funeral. The CEO appreciated Yanase's contribution to the studio's work and shared heartfelt words on the loss: "We sincerely thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the warm support and encouragement you all provided during his lifetime" (via automatic translation).
Started in the 1990s, Yūji Yanase's career and portfolio include titles such as the beloved sci-fi dystopian film Akira, Doraemon the Movie: Nobita's Dorabian Nights, Macross 7, Tenchi Universe, and more. Yanase also served as animation director on episodes of Saber Marionette J, Hellsing, Chobits, Symphogear, and many more. He also directed anime In Another World With My Smartphone, If It's for My Daughter, I'd Even Defeat a Demon Lord, In the Land of Leadale, My Unique Skill Makes Me OP even at Level 1, among many others.
