The game industry turbulence is going on, even affecting those working on successful projects.
The gaming industry continues to struggle with layoffs, the latest being at Respawn Entertainment, developer of Apex Legends. The EA-owned developer reportedly let go of several Apex Legends team members, according to employee reports.
Reports of layoffs emerged as multiple employees from the EA-owned studio revealed the news. Aaron Stump, Apex Legends Level Designer had posted on Twitter:
The exact roles and departments affected by these layoffs remain unclear. However, it has been confirmed that Alex Ackerman, the social media lead for Apex Legends was among those let go.
Despite the cuts, Apex Legends, which has grown significantly since its 2019 launch, appears to have a secure future. EA reportedly plans to continue investing in the development of the game, with a focus on improving new players' experiences.
The layoffs at Respawn are part of EA's ongoing cuts, aiming to impact around 5% of the workforce. This strategy, explained as a pivot from future licensed IP to their own franchises, is part of a larger industry trend, with dozens of other gaming companies letting go of staff, including Activision Blizzard and Supermassive Games.
