Apex Legends Might Slow Down Character Releases in the Future
There could be new seasons without new Legends one day.
Apex Legends was released in 2019 with only a handful of characters. Now, after 12 seasons, the game has 20 Legends, with a new one around the corner. Such variety sounds good for gameplay, but when does 'good' become 'too much?'
Respawn is planning to continue releasing a new hero with every season, but Senior Character Designer Devan McGuire said this might not be the case one day. He told Dexerto that Apex focuses more on gunplay than on characters' abilities, but with more Legends added, it becomes harder to make them “unique, without being overpowered or too niche.”
McGuire admitted there might be a "breaking point" when more heroes with every season will be unhealthy for the game.
"Whether or not that pattern continues is an ongoing discussion, and it might not be changed, but we don’t want to saturate the pool."
What McGuire could say for sure is that Respawn won’t be adding two Legends in one season any time soon.
New characters require not only to be useful and unique, but they also must have a silhouette different from other Legends to be recognizable by players, according to Lead Concept Artist Cristina Ferez. The players need to immediately understand what abilities they might have to face.
So far, the talk about slowing down the character releases is just that – a talk. Season 13 is coming to Apex Legends on May 10, and with it – a new Legend Newcastle and a reworked Ranked system.
