Apple has recently announced sweeping changes to the App Store that will primarily impact iPhone users in the European Union. Here's a breakdown of what has changed.
Starting in March 2024 with the release of iOS 17.4, iPhone users in the EU will be able to download third-party app stores. However, these app stores must be approved by Apple to ensure customer safety.
iPhone owners will have the option to set a third-party app store as their default instead of the standard App Store. The specific alternative stores that will be available on iPhones are currently unknown.
The App Store now allows apps for game streaming services, such as Xbox Cloud Gaming and GeForce Now. Previously, users had to rely on web applications to access these services. This change took effect on January 25, 2024, and applies globally.

In the EU, iPhone users are now able to use third-party browsers. This means that browsers like Chrome can offer their full versions on iPhones, rather than being limited to WebKit as before.
These changes were prompted by the approval of the Digital Markets Act by the European Parliament in July 2022. The DMA aims to limit the power of major tech corporations like Apple and Google. Both companies have expressed criticism of the law, claiming it is overly restrictive and could compromise user privacy and device security.
