Apple AR/VR Headset Might Be Announced This Spring

Apple seems to have prioritized the development of the operating system for its upcoming mixed-reality headset which likely caused other projects to suffer delays.

Apple is reportedly planning to reveal its long-rumored mixed-reality headset, which is likely to be called Apple Reality Pro, this spring, ahead of its annual Worldwide Developers Conference in June, and start shipping the product in the fall of 2023.

That's according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman who also claims that Apple is currently developing an operating system for the device which is expected to be named "xrOS". Gurman says that prototype hardware has already been shared with several "high-profile software developers" who will test the headset and start working on the first wave of third-party apps for the device.

At the same time, he notes that Apple still has to work out several "kinks" in the hardware, software, and services as well as how it will be marketed and sold. Gurman believes that to make it happen, the company has "roped in resources" from other departments meaning that Apple's other projects have suffered delays and budget cuts as a result.

For instance, he anticipates that iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and macOS 14 will have fewer major new features than originally planned. Similarly, there most likely won't be major changes for AirPods and Apple Watch lines as well as new MacBook Pros and new iPad lines will have just "marginal leaps" compared to the current generation of the devices.
