Based on the latest statements from Epic Games, it seems that Apple has to reverse its actions and let the developer of Fortnite back to iOS in Europe. That's a win for Epic Games, at least for now, as we never know what Apple is up to.
"Apple has told us and committed to the European Commission that they will reinstate our developer account. This sends a strong signal to developers that the European Commission will act swiftly to enforce the Digital Markets Act and hold gatekeepers accountable. We are moving forward as planned to launch the Epic Games Store and bring Fortnite back to iOS in Europe," reads the statement from Epic Games.
For those who missed the drama, let me share some details with you. In late January, Apple promised to allow third-party app stores on iOS for EU users, and Epic Games aimed to bring Fortnite back to iOS by launching the Epic Games Store on Apple devices.
Firstly, Apple approved a new Epic Games developer account in February, but then the company banned it, referring to past rule violations and unreliability. Later, Epic Games informed the European Commission about the situation, and following some pressure from the European regulator, Apple finally agreed to reinstate the Epic Games account.
"A big win for European rule of law, for the European Commission, and for the freedom of developers worldwide to speak up," shared Tim Sweeney on Twitter.
