ArcBrush 1.5 Upgrades To Color-Managed 32-Bit Float Image Pipeline

Introducing Cryptomatte support, eleven new nodes, and more, alongside a reduced focus on AI features.

Albert Omoss has launched a major update to his node-based image editor, positioned as an alternative to Photoshop. In ArcBrush, every action is a node, so the whole project stays editable and nothing gets flattened. Version 1.5 moves the workflow from 8-bit color to a color-managed 32-bit float pipeline, making the same approach work for grading, rendering, and final delivery where color accuracy matters.

Each document can now use a working color space like Linear, P3-D65 sRGB, ACEScg, ACEScct, with display transforms handled through OpenColorIO. It also includes an ACES 2.0 configuration and an AgX view. ArcBrush 1.5 supports 16-bit PNG and TIFF files, float TIFFs, and OpenEXR files, including multi-part and tiled EXRs.

There are eleven new nodes, with eight focused on color, compositing, and lighting. Relight adds lighting to flat 2D artwork using normal maps, with controls for point and directional lights and separate lighting outputs. New compositing tools include Merge with multiple blend modes, Premult and Unpremult for alpha handling, Despill for removing color spill, and Clamp for controlling bright values. The update also adds Apply LUT for color looks, Cryptomatte for selecting objects from EXR renders, Hex Tile for reducing texture repetition, and Lens Distortion with true barrel, pincushion, and correction modes.

This release also changes ArcBrush's pricing model. It remains free for personal and non-commercial use, while commercial users can get ArcBrush Pro with a one-time $49 license instead of a subscription.

The Pro license works fully offline and has no device limit, and a 14-day free trial gives users access to all features. Previously, ArcBrush was free but included credit-based charges for AI node usage. A change many artists will likely appreciate is that version 1.5 reduces ArcBrush's focus on AI. As the developer states, "ArcBrush does not use generative AI or a credit-based system".
