Assassin's Creed boss shared that Infinity will be a platform that will host both past and future Assassin’s Creed titles and will represent somewhat of a launcher but with an Animus interface.
During Ubisoft Forward 2022, the French publisher officially revealed Assassin's Creed Infinity, a new platform for Assassin’s Creed games that will serve as a hub that ties all the strands of the series together across multiple games.
In an interview with IGN, Assassin's Creed boss Marc-Alexis Côté revealed a few more details about the platform saying that Infinity will host both past and future Assassin’s Creed titles, starting with the recently announced Assassin's Creed Codename Red, the game that follows the life of a Shinobi in Feudal Japan.
According to Côté, Infinity will be somewhat of a launcher, although, instead of displaying the games as a library-like collection, the platform will have the Animus interface, with each entry in the Assassin's Creed series being displayed as a DNA memory. Through this hub, it will also be possible to access the encyclopedia of the world and, possibly, records telling about the activities of the Abstergo Industries corporation and other events unfolding in the universe of the game in the 21st century.
"The way we tell the story will evolve with time," Côté said. "It's something that we're doing for the long term, not for the short term. But the abstraction that we want people to have is [Infinity] is your Animus. It is your DNA explorer on your desktop. You are the main story character."
Apparently, fragments featuring the modern-day storyline will be abandoned in future games as Côté noted that players "will be able to jump right in there and never be interrupted or need to know who Desmond and Layla is."
The Assassin's Creed boss also noted that the platform is going to not only update and supplement existing games but also experiment with formats and the future installments in the series that will appear on Infinity will vary in both size and genre. For instance, Codename Red will be an RPG in the vein of Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla, while Codename Hexe will not have any RPG elements at all.
He also added that the games available in the hub will vary in length, style, and price and emphasized that the Infinity format will allow Ubisoft to continue supporting individual games indefinitely.
In a separate interview, Côté also spoke about the upcoming Assassin's Creed Mirage, the title which was also revealed during Ubisoft Forward, but will not be a part of Infinity. The developer shared that the title will be similar in length to the older games in the series (which were around 15-20 hours for the main story).
When asked whether the games of that scale or even smaller might appear on Infinity, Côté stated that such games will come to the platform and will be priced accordingly. He also noted that the platform will offer free experiences as well.
