Assassin's Creed Shadows' Lead Producer on Lengthy Game Production

Karl Onnée discussed the process of improving the game and achieving historical accuracy.

The Lead Producer of Assassin's Creed Shadows, Karl Onnée, discussed the game's production in his recent interview.

The game has been in development since 2020 and is scheduled for November 15, 2024. Karl Onnée explained that to improve the game and meet high expectations, constant iteration is needed. This involves getting feedback from the players and the team, and this process can't be sped up.

Another aspect of the game that requires special attention is its historical accuracy. "We are trying to create a game that is as authentic as possible," the producer pointed out. He also shared that making the game set in Japan was "something we have always wanted to do, but we wanted to find the right time." Now, according to the producer, the team has more advanced technical opportunities at its disposal, which ensures that they deliver their vision of the game the way they wish to.

The development team also visited Japan to make the game's world look more authentic. "You get a better sense of the dimensions of the building, of the culture, of monuments and shrines that are… it is important to represent all that correctly," explained Karl Onnée. The correct representation of the locations is also important as the company intends to attract more Japanese players.

The historical accuracy of the upcoming game has been closely examined. For instance, Ubisoft apologized and removed some of its images after it was noticed that the developer used a flag of the Japanese historical reenactment group Sekigahara Teppo-tai without permission. Also, a petition appeared on the internet, allegedly started by a Japanese player who accused the company of historical inaccuracies, and a Japanese politician investigated the game over cultural appropriation.
