Filtering out machine-made slop on itch.io just got easier thanks to the new field in the project edit pages.
The human side of the ongoing Creators vs. AI has just secured another victory over on itch.io, with the website's creator Leaf "leafo" Corcoran announcing the deployment of a new field in the project edit pages that makes it much easier to filter out AI-generated slop when shopping for assets on the platform.
Dubbed 'Generative AI Disclosure,' the field asks whether your project contains generative AI content and is mandatory for all asset creators on itch.io. Selecting 'Yes' automatically tags the page as 'AI-Generated,' with users also being able to specify the types of generative AI they use – Graphics, Sound, Text & Dialog, and Code – and receive sub-tags based on their selections. Projects that do not use the controversial technology and select 'No' are tagged as 'No AI.'
"This field is now required for all asset creators on itch.io. If you have a public asset page on itch.io and you view your dashboard, you will now see a blocking dialog instructing you to classify your pages," leafo wrote in the official announcement. "Because we understand that some asset creators can have a large quantity of pages, we've included a bulk tagging tool to simplify the process of tagging assets. Assets comprised of generative AI (even if modified afterward) that are not tagged will no longer be eligible for indexing on our browse pages. We'll have a grace period for people to update their pages, then we'll likely use user reports to handle pages that have not been addressed."
While the announcement doesn't specifically mention games hosted on itch.io and only refers to "assets," implying that only asset sellers might need to tag their projects, comments on Leafo's statement and the fact that the 'No AI' tag is also available in itch.io's 'Browse Games' library suggest that indie game developers will also need to follow the new rule if they want to host their projects on the platform.
