Atari's Hit Game Gets A Metroidvania Cyberpunk Sequel After 40 Years

Honestly, it took me a while to calculate the number of years since the original game's release until this sequel's launch. Yes, it's been more than 42 years.

42 years after its original release, one of Atari's best-selling games, Yars' Revenge, is set to make a comeback in a surprising revival by WayForward Technologies.   

Yars Rising, a 2D action-adventure Metroidvania game, promises to rekindle the legacy of the 1981 classic game, taking it to new heights with a cyberpunk anime twist. 

The original Yars’ Revenge captivated players with its unique gameplay, where an insect-like creature, Yar, embarked on a mission to destroy the formidable enemy, Qotile. The game's blend of evasion, shooting, and strategic tactics earned critical acclaim and commercial success. 

In the upcoming sequel, players will control a young hacker named Emi Kimura, hired to infiltrate the shadowy QoTech corporation. The game will showcase an immersive, expansive mystery solved through 2D platforming action. As the adventure unfolds, Emi will enhance her hacking skills, unlocking previously inaccessible areas and solving stimulating mini-games that pay homage to the original Yars' Revenge.

The more Emi delves into QoTech's facilities, the deeper the sci-fi mystery becomes. Assisted by a diverse cast of hacker allies, Emi will uncover her connection to an alien race and unlock unimaginable powers.

Yars Rising will launch in 2024 and will be available on Switch, PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and the Atari VCS. You can check the game's features on Steam and wishlist it if you want to give it a try.
