Avatar The Way of Water Wins the Oscar in Visual Effects

With this win, Wētā Digital's Joe Letteri collected his fifth Academy Award in this category.

Avatar: The Way of Water, a 2022 blockbuster directed by James Cameron, has won the 2023 Oscar for visual effects, surpassing other notable nominees such as All Quiet on the Western Front, The Batman, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and Top Gun: Maverick.

With this win, Senior VFX Artist and the current Director of Wētā Digital Joe Letteri collected his fifth Academy Award in this category, following his Oscars for the original Avatar, King Kong, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Furthermore, VFX Supervisor Richard Baneham accepted his second Oscar in VFX, having previously won the trophy for the original Avatar, while Wētā's Eric Saindon and Daniel Barrett each won their first Academy Award.
