Developers of Avowed have shared details about the game's production in the fifth part of the documentary film about Obsidian's history. It turns out that at the beginning of Avowed's development, Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart insisted on making the RPG cooperative. Urquhart believed that the concept of a multiplayer game appealed to publishers so Obsidian had a better chance of securing financing in the range of $40-80 million. Avowed was being developed during a time when the studio was still independent.
Then, the developers quickly realized that they were focusing too much on co-op and changing their workflow, rather than creating what makes Obsidian games memorable.
This revelation made developers reevaluate their decisions and turn Avowed into a classic single-player RPG. The work on a new vertical slice of the game in just eight months. In the documentary, Urquhart admitted that he was wrong to insist on creating a cooperative game.
The Obsidian team is sure that Avowed will appeal not only to fans of the studio but to a wider audience as well. The developers are now busy creating deep gameplay systems, unique content, and meticulously crafting the game's world and its characters.
Avowed is set to launch in 2024 on PC and Xbox Series. Learn more about the game here. Back in June, Avowed developer Briar Diem confirmed that the game is still in its early development stage but "is very Obsidian". Learn more here.
