3D Artist Nikodem "DemNikoArt" Bredlich, who impressed us with a fantastic mechanical leg rig, beetle-like wing structure, and a whole 3D-printed Flame Mammoth assembly in the past, has unveiled his latest creation, a reworked version of Storm Eagle's wing, another Mega Man X's Reploid character.
The artist shared that this rig is just as difficult to animate as it looks and utilizes just one main controller, relying heavily on drivers, often used to animate elements without keyframes, in cases where math makes more sense to automate a process.
Each axis of the gizmo controls one move of the wing. In the video, you can see that moving the gizmo along the Z-axis causes the feathers to rotate down while moving it along the X-axis makes them flap back and forth. So, moving it randomly creates this fluid flapping motion.
