The BAFTA Games Awards, an annual event hosted by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, honors outstanding creative achievement in the video game industry. It is considered one of the most prestigious awards in the gaming world.

The nominations for the 20th BAFTA Games Awards have been announced, with the spotlight shining bright on Baldur’s Gate 3, a role-playing game by Larian Studios which received numerous nominations, including the coveted Best Game title.
The action-adventure game, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 by Insomniac Games follows closely, securing nine nominations. Alan Wake 2 by Remedy Entertainment is up for eight awards. Other notable mentions include The Legend of Zelda: Tears of The Kingdom by Nintendo and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor by Respawn, each earning six nominations.

In the indie gaming sphere, marine adventure game Dave The Diver by MintRocket, and rhythm action game Hi-Fi Rush by Tango Gameworks have both garnered five nominations. Other indie games like Cocoon, Dredge, and Viewfinder have impressed as well, each securing four nominations.

Performances have not been overlooked, with 11 out of 12 nominees receiving their first BAFTA nomination. The list includes acting talents such as Sam Lake for Alan Wake 2, and a group from Baldur’s Gate 3 — Amelia Tyler, Andrew Wincott, Neil Newbon, Samantha Béart, and Tracey Wiles. There are also notable nominations from Final Fantasy 14, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

In light of recent challenges faced by the video game industry including mass layoffs and studio closures, the BAFTA Games Awards has taken on heightened significance. Emma Baehr, Executive Director of Awards and Content at BAFTA, and Tara Saunders, Chair of the BAFTA Games Committee, underscored the importance of celebrating creativity and talent during these difficult times.

The 20th BAFTA Games Awards ceremony is scheduled for 11 April 2024. It will be hosted at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, Southbank Centre, London, and will be streamed live at 7:00 PM BST/2:00 PM EST/11:00 AM PST on BAFTA’s YouTube, Twitch, and Twitter channels.
