Swen Vincke says Larian only expected the peak online of "100K or so at max".
Over the weekend, Larian Studios' highly-anticipated RPG Baldur's Gate 3 managed to set and break a couple of concurrent player records, cementing its place as one of the greatest and most successful launches in gaming history.
Earlier, we reported that the long-awaited game, launched last week, attracted an impressive number of over 300,000 players within its first three hours and peaked at 472,136 concurrent players shortly after its release. However, during the weekend, Baldur's Gate 3 surpassed those numbers by a considerable margin, reaching an astonishing all-time peak of 814,666 concurrent players, according to SteamDB.
Currently, Baldur's Gate 3 holds the 9th spot for the highest number of concurrent Steam users overall and the 4th spot when considering only single-player games, losing only to Cyberpunk 2077, Elden Ring, and Hogwarts Legacy. Notably, Hogwarts Legacy's highest peak online player count stands at 879,308, just ~65K more than BG3.
Earlier, head of Larian Studios Swen Vincke, in response to Baldur's Gate 3 hitting the 500K milestone, also tweeted that it would be in his best interest to avoid the studio's IT department since he told them to expect around 100,000 concurrent Steam users at best. Whether it is the truth, a joke, or a flex remains unknown.
Following its triumphant PC launch, Baldur's Gate 3 is now poised to set impressive records on PlayStation 5 as well. According to a recent report by Benji-Sales, the game has secured the top spot as the best-selling pre-order on the PlayStation Store in the US.
