In a recent interview with Advancing North East, Samuel T. Sawian, co-founder and CEO of the Indian-based game and mobile app developer Barking Deer Entertainment, spoke about his career path in the gaming industry and shared how important it is to know all the steps of the development process.
Sawian shared that playing video games – both on console and PC – is what pushed him towards a decision to make games himself. So, starting as a programmer he further dove into game design to come closer to his dream.
He revealed that he actually started by creating board games which turned out to be a really useful experience that taught him the basics of game mechanics. Later, Sawian worked as a game tester for some time which gave him an understanding of how the game should be built to be attractive for users.
Sawian went on to explain the challenges a developer could face while creating a game with one of them being the need to multitask. "When I started out I thought: 'Oh my God! They are giving me too many things.' But the blessing of that is [that] you need to know all these things to understand the ins and outs of the game."
During his career, Sawian worked in various positions, including programmer, game designer, tester, and game producer, and throughout his speech, he many times reiterated how helpful knowing how the entire development process is organized was for him.
He also emphasized the importance of discipline in creating a high-quality game and gave some tips for beginners in the industry.
"Some advice for the youth, actually finding something that you want to do, picking one think that you love or deeply interested [in]," he said. "And if you're interested in that, just go all out. Be courageous, ... just keep going. Because honestly, the only person who can stop you, who can prevent [you] from going forward is you."
