Zampella suggests that the reason for the game's failure was that the developers "strayed a little too far from what Battlefield is." However, he believes that changes to the development structure will help the game series.
When EA and DICE's Battlefield 2042 launched in November 2021, it wasn't well-perceived by both critics and the audience, getting the lowest critics ratings in the entire Battlefield series and a number of negative reviews from players who criticized the game for extensive bugs, a lack of features previously included in other Battlefield games, and several changes to the gameplay.
Speaking to Barron's, Vince Zampella, the co-founder of EA's Respawn Entertainment who was put in charge of the Battlefield series last year, shared his opinion on why Battlefield 2042 turned out to be a failure.
According to Zampella, one of the reasons for the disappointing release was that the developers "strayed a little too far from what Battlefield is." He suggested that the studio focused too much on what will help sales of the title, not paying due attention to everything else.
"[The developers] tried to do a couple things that were maybe ambitious: grow the player count etc. I don’t think they spent enough time iterating on what makes that fun," Zampella said. "It’s not inherently a bad idea. The way they were set up and the way they executed just didn’t allow them to find the best thing possible."
Zampella also stated that after changes to the management of the Battlefield franchise, the studios changed this approach, which he hopes will help the game series. According to him, currently, multiple studios are working on the Battlefield series with the management "bringing the best talent together and giving them the time to do something amazing."
In addition, the game designer said that there is definitely a place on the market for "traditional" shooters featuring multiplayer mode as well as a story campaign and shared that he's absolutely sure that the players are interested in either of or both components.
