Beamdog Unveils First-Person Fantasy Rogue-Lite MythForce

The studio's next game is inspired by the 80's Saturday morning cartoons and will be set in a fantasy world.

Beamdog, the developer best known for remastering Baldur's Gate and Planescape: Torment, has unveiled its next project. The studio is currently working on a first-person rogue-lite called MythForce. The game is inspired by the 80's Saturday morning cartoons and will be set in a fantasy world.

"MythForce is pure, unadulterated fun – right out of the Saturday mornings of my childhood," Beamdog chief executive Trent Oster said in a statement. "It’s a big departure from the RPG classics we’re known for, but the Beamdog DNA is evident if you know where to look."

According to MythForce director, Luke Rideout, Deep Rock Galactics and Vermintide significantly influenced the gameplay of the new title. "It's definitely not a Baldur's Gate," Rideout said.

The new title is powered by Unreal Engine and will feature characters who continually level up gaining new abilities as they explore procedurally-generated maps. The game will launch in Early Access for PC via Epic Games Store on April 20.

At launch, MythForce will include four playable characters in a first episode titled Bastion of the Beastlord. The game is expected to remain in early access for about a year with Beamdog adding more episodes and updates "every few months" relying on player feedback.

On Wednesday, it was also announced that Aspyr Media acquired Beamdog. The studio is said to keep working independently and MythForce will become the first original title for the pairing.
