An in-depth discussion of Joker, Cirque du Soleil, and how it's such a shame that players don't watch cutscenes.
It's well-known to developers and gamers alike that no matter how good a video game's cutscenes are, a sizeable chunk of players skip them even on their first playthrough, ignoring the plot in favor of actual gameplay.
Naturally, it was only a matter of time before that act of cutscene-skipping itself became a game within a game, and as YouTuber Cuttyflame recently shared, that's exactly what Bennett Foddy, Gabe Cuzzillo, and Maxi Boch have done in their latest title, a QWOP-style walking simulator, Baby Steps.
As demonstrated by Cuttyflame, if you skip around 30 of Baby Steps' cutscenes – which itself is no easy feat, with each skip presenting a mini-game that get progressively more challenging the further you go – you'll be rewarded with, you guessed it, another cutscene.
In it, the game teleports you to a snowy cabin in the woods, kicking off a fourth-wall-breaking conversation between the protagonist Nate and a humanoid donkey named Moose, voiced by Cuzzillo and Foddy respectively, who discuss a wide range of topics ranging from movies featuring DC Comics' Joker to Cirque du Soleil, to which games had the best cutscenes in their opinion, and how unfortunate it is that players choose not to watch them.
The entire conversation lasts nearly 30 minutes and can be watched in full above or by clicking this link.
