Bethesda Devs On The Possibility Of Fallout Leaving The US

"I would never say never, but I will say, probably not."

Bethesda

The Fallout series is deeply rooted in the United States, allowing players to explore various post-apocalyptic cities in the country, such as Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., San Francisco, and Boston. Over the years, one topic has been mentioned and discussed among the community: Would Fallout ever leave the US?

Recently, Bethesda Game Studios' creative director, Jonathan Rush, and lead producer, Bill LaCoste, shared their thoughts on this topic during an interview with Insider Gaming at the Summer Game Fest. "I would never say never, but I will say, probably not."

Rush went on to explain that a significant part of the Fallout spirit is its "sense of America."

"That’s kind of pulsing through all the stories and the scenery and the set dressing. If a story like Fallout was to be taken out of the United States, I think a big challenge with that would be kind of expressing that same tone and that same feel...That’s a bit part of what makes it Fallout."

Bill LaCoste, who worked on Fallout 76 as the lead producer, agreed with Rush's standpoint. He said, "I think being told through our lids is what keeps people very mystified about what else is happening across the world, because what we’re telling is from our perspective of it, and I think that will always be a bit of a mystery."

Ever since the first Fallout game came out in 1997, the franchise has remained popular. The last two installments, Fallout 4 and Fallout 76, have enjoyed impressive sales. Fallout 4 sold 1.2 million units on Steam within just 24 hours of its release. Fallout 76 also performed well, selling 1.4 million digital copies by the end of 2018 and surpassing 11 million players by November 2021.

Despite these impressive numbers, it seems that the next game in the series is not on the horizon anytime soon. Last year, the Fallout TV show brought the franchise many new fans. There were reports that Xbox wanted to speed up the development of Fallout 5, but Bethesda is currently focused on The Elder Scrolls VI and might leave Fallout for a later date.
