Bethesda Has Shared Some Details on Starfield's Quests

The game's lead quest designer Will Shen detailed how random encounter quests will work on Starfield's planets and how companions will react to players' decisions.

Bethesda Softworks has released a new episode of Constellation Questions – a series of videos where developers from the Starfield team answer some of the most popular players' questions about the upcoming action RPG. The new video features the game's lead game designer Will Shen who discussed Starfiled's quests and how they are arranged in the game.

According to Shen, random encounter quests can be found almost anywhere on any of the multiple planets you can visit in Starfield. Moreover, the game will generate not only similar missions but also characters and locations associated with them.

"Now, you could say maybe you're going to an outpost, and you actually discover there's a whole group of people there with a particular problem, whereas before, it might be just a person coming up to you along the road, now it's an actual whole location that can be put there," Shen explained. "And maybe there, they have a problem like, 'One of our members was kidnapped. They've been kidnapped by some pirates. We think they're over there.' [Players] actually are placed in a whole other location with that person in it and enemies around it."

In addition, Shen shared that one part of the campaign will be dedicated to the solar system which, in the game's lore, is called the "Old Neighborhood". The designer didn't specify if players will get to the Earth itself but promised that there would be a whole large colony on Mars with their own quests.

Speaking of faction missions, Shen noted that the team decided to make them more "personal" – they will influence the politics and principles of the group. Not every series of quests will lead the player to leadership in the community, but many of them will have "far-reaching consequences" for all of its members.

The designer also detailed the role of the companions during the quests. According to him, the companions that players will meet during the main quest will have their own opinions on players' decisions. More than that, at some points in the game, there will be an ability to turn to the companions and ask them to speak on your behalf.
