Bethesda’s Todd Howard Revealed Starfield’s Frame Rate on Xbox Series X and S

Three months before the game's scheduled release, the team shared performance numbers.

Following the Xbox Games Showcase, Bethesda's Director and Executive Producer discussed players' expectations and claimed that both Xbox Series X and S editions will be locked at 30 FPS. At those frame rates, the game will run in 1440p on the Series S and 4K on the Series X.

According to Howard, this complex decision was made in order to provide a "consistent" experience as players explore extremely rich, computer-generated galaxies filled with a mix of hand-made locations and procedurally-generated planets.

“I think it’ll come as no surprise, given our previous games, what we go for,” Howard said. “Always these huge, open worlds, fully dynamic, hyper detail where anything can happen. And we do want to do that. It’s 4K in the X. It’s 1440 on the S. We do lock it at 30, because we want that fidelity, we want all that stuff. We don’t want to sacrifice any of it.”

Bethesda's Director went on to say that despite the 30 FPS lock, the team feels confident in how unique the game feels to play. He also stated that Starfield needed the "headroom" that 30 FPS provides in order to avoid having to worry about intense gameplay situations leading to inconsistent frame rates.

Earlier, Bethesda released an official gameplay trailer for Starfield at Microsoft's Xbox Games Showcase 2023. Among the other companies, Playground Games also shared a look at their upcoming reboot of Xbox’s 2004 Fable
