Bethesda Says Mick Gordon's Claims Were "One-Sided and Unjust"

Bethesda claims that DOOM Eternal composer Mick Gordon "mischaracterized" events and that it has "documented evidence" to back up claims.

About two years ago, DOOM Eternal fans were baffled by the soundtrack for the game which was promised as one of the items included with the collector's edition – at first, the OST was delayed and when it was finally released, fans were dissatisfied with the sub-par quality of some tracks.

Back in May 2020, DOOM Eternal executive producer Marty Stratton shared a post on Reddit where he explained why the soundtrack for the game had been delayed from being included in the collector's edition of the game adding that the game's composer Mick Gordon had missed multiple deadlines and made several online posts that misled DOOM fans.

Earlier this month, Gordon published a lengthy detailed statement regarding his experiences working on the music for the game and the OST where he claimed that it included "severe" crunch. He also added that he had to wait for up to eleven months to be paid for his work as well as complained about poor management at id Software, particularly from Stratton.

Gordon blamed id Software for requiring him to make final versions of DOOM Eternal gameplay tracks on a tight schedule at an early stage of development. He also mentioned that the studio had announced the soundtrack without signing a contract with him, quietly made their own version of the soundtrack without Gordon's involvement as well as didn't pay for some of the music used in the soundtrack.

Now, Bethesda took to Twitter to address Gordon's comments saying that they "mischaracterized" and "misrepresented" the id Software team that was responsible for the development of DOOM Eternal. The company assured fans that it has all the facts and evidence regarding the conflict between id Software, Martin Stretton, lead audio designer Chad Mossholder, and Mick Gordon and that it "unequivocally" supports the studio, Stretton, and Mossholder.

"The recent post by Mick Gordon both mischaracterized and misrepresented the team at id Software, the development of DOOM Eternal, Marty Stratton, and Chad Mossholder with a one-sided and unjust account of an irreparable professional relationship," Bethesda wrote. "We reject the distortion of the truth and selective presentation of incomplete 'facts.' We stand ready with full and complete documented evidence to disclose in an appropriate venue as needed."

The company also added that since Gordon published his statement, the id Software team, including Stretton and Mossholder, has started to experience threats of violence which, according to Bethesda, will be met with "swift and appropriate action" to protect employees. The company asked fans to refrain from any attacks on either individual, regardless of which side of the conflict they are.
