Bethesda Says That Loading Screens Are "Necessary Bane"

It's not because they are lazy.

Bethesda

If you're playing the remake of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion right now, you have noticed its endless loading screens between areas and even rooms – something that feels bizarre and extremely rudimentary in 2025. This comes not long after players' complaints about Starfield having the same issue, albeit at a smaller scale. The consensus is: games should not have such obvious loading screens and so many of them.

Alas, we will have to deal with them because Bethesda doesn't have any other choice, according to its former lead designer Bruce Nesmith.

In a recent interview with VideoGamer, he revealed that nobody wants to make them, but loading screens are "a necessary bane of the existing of Bethesda since time immemorial."

"Everybody who complains about them assumes that it’s done because we’re lazy or we don’t want to follow the modern thinking on stuff. The reality is the Bethesda games are so detailed and so graphics intensive… you just can't have both present at the same time."

"It’s not that anybody at Bethesda ever wanted to do it. We just didn’t have a choice, really," he added. Bethesda has tried to hide loading, but it led to issues with performance. "All the fancy tricks for streaming and loading and all that, you end up with hitching. So you’re actually better off stopping the game briefly, doing a loading screen and then continuing on."

"If you make a game that has less going on, it’s a tighter experience and not a [true] open-world experience. So it’s just one of those necessary evils, as it were, it’s not that anybody at Bethesda ever wanted to do it. We just didn’t have a choice, really, if the game was going to have the experience we wanted it to have."

So it seems like you should get used to loading screens, they are not going anywhere.
