Blender Addresses the Recent DDoS Attacks on Its Website

While the attack is still ongoing, the website is mostly back to normal.

In recent days, Blender's primary website has come under a severe DDoS attack, where hackers have flooded the software's servers with an overwhelming number of requests, causing them to go down.

Francesco Siddi, the Chief Operating Officer of the Blender Foundation, has recently addressed the situation, stating that despite the Blender admins' best efforts to resolve the issue, attempts to block IP ranges from attackers proved ineffective as they quickly resurfaced from different locations. Additionally, during periods when the website was not under attack, the servers became overloaded with pending logs of regular requests, "sending the infrastructure into a loop of self-destruction".

In response to the attack, the team has transferred the website's core to a more secure service with DDoS protection, successfully bringing Blender's website back online. However, it's important to note that the attack is still ongoing, and consequently, users may still encounter some issues.

If you still have trouble accessing the website, here are some official mirrors shared by the Blender team:

While the team is busy combating the issue, the community is trying to understand why someone would target an open-source software that, compared to many of its competitors, receives minimal criticism and is generally cherished by users.

Over on Reddit, Blender enthusiasts have been delving into discussions about potential perpetrators behind the attack, exploring a range of theories, ranging from somewhat credible to implausible and downright absurd:
