Breakdown: Ancient Modular 3D Houses on Stylized Colorful Island

See how Vlad Trutniev made buildings look less repetitive.

Take a look at this beautiful vibrant island full of modular buildings. If you want to see how the environment was created, you're in luck: 3D artist Vlad Trutniev has prepared a breakdown of the scene made in Unreal Engine.

With this project, he wanted to build houses of different shapes, colors, and appearances and "be flexible in the process." So he made a modular kit for the buildings inspired by ancient Middle Eastern architecture.

"My insight with this project was that you can use specific techniques to achieve high variation of houses. This way no two houses will look the same. One of my findings was the granularity of the modular kit, which allows you to be very flexible and creative in the building process."

Trutniev started with two types of kits: a normal one, which helps to build houses of simple shades faster, and a granular one with modules half the length for more complex shapes. He then turned to vertex painting, deferred decals for small details, and added props.

The plaster and brick tileable textures were taken from Megascans, and everything else is shader work.

This kit allows you to avoid repetitiveness by swapping individual modules like windows or doors.

You can find the full breakdown and other works on Trutniev's website.
