Breakdown: Creating Procedural Wrinkles in Blender

Blender Studio's Simon Thommes shared a lengthy breakdown explaining how the procedural Wrinkle Maps for Charge's main character were made.

In case you missed it, around a month ago, Blender Studio released Charge, a short movie made entirely in Blender with its plot revolving around an old man who broke into a robot factory and confronted a deadly security droid. The project's goal was to push Blender's interactive PBR workflow to its limits and challenge the creative team to pursue realism.

Recently, 3D Artist and Generalist at Blender Studio Simon Thommes revisited Charge by sharing a detailed breakdown of how the procedural Wrinkle Maps for the movie's main character were made using only Blender.

In the breakdown, the artist spoke at length about the techniques the team used to create the wrinkles, explained how the Tension Maps were set up, discussed how Blender's Geometry Nodes were used, and shared multiple behind-the-scene demos showcasing the working process.
