Building a DIY 2cm PlayStation 5 Slim

The water cooled PS5 is made by DIY Perks.

PlayStation 5 is the largest console in the series, and while Sony usually brings slim versions several years after the original's release, Matt from the YouTube channel DIY Perks decided to create one himself.

The result can show off its 20mm thickness, it's only a little wider than a DVD, which is much slimmer than the original 92mm. In addition, the creator managed to integrate water cooling into the console.

Due to PS5's components' thickness, Matt could take only the motherboard from it. Everything else, including a full-cover water block for the motherboard, flash storage, power circuitry, VRM, and heatsinks for the other components, was carved by him. The whole case was made of copper, which could render this whole project useless from a practical point of view, but the console wasn't created to save money.

Matt replaced the original 31A power supply with an HP DP5-750RB A power supply with a capacity of 750W. He then added a long aluminum case for the power supply and the water cooling components with Alphacool's 7x40 slim radiator and seven Noctua NF-A4x20 fans.

After the first attempt at using the slim console resulted in it freezing, Matt managed to run Horizon Forbidden West for several hours and measure the temperature using a temperature probe, which showed 46 degrees Celsius on the SoC. Considering the probe isn't inside the SoC, he estimated the temperature to be around 65 degrees Celsius.

The RAM showed a temperature of 52 degrees Celsius, while the VRM heated up to 44 degrees Celsius. Compared to the original PS5's temperatures recorded by Gamers Nexus, the slim version achieved better results with 75 degrees on the SoC, 94 – for RAM, and 71 – for VRM.

Now, we just have to wait for Sony's PS5 Slim and see if it's thinner than Matt's creation. While you're waiting, don't forget to join our new Reddit pageour new Telegram channel, follow us on Instagram and Twitter, where we are sharing breakdowns, the latest news, awesome artworks, and more.
