Call of Duty Enrages the Community by Announcing the Seth Rogen Operator

"This is worse than Concord."

T-800, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the doll from Squid Game, an abundance of outfits that would get you killed in seconds on a real battlefield and are more appropriate for a Halloween party – by now it's obvious that Activision is doing everything it can to turn the once-revered Call of Duty franchise into Fortnite.

Having completely ditched the gritty realism and military badassery of the OG Call of Duty games, the developer has strayed even further from what made classic COD great, now announcing that the upcoming Season 03 Reloaded for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, launching May 1, will feature none other than Seth Rogen as a playable operator.

"Join actor, comedian, and filmmaker Seth Rogen on an epic High Art journey," reads the list of Season 03's features. "Earn XP in Multiplayer, Zombies, or Call of Duty: Warzone while the event is live to earn rewards like the new Ladra SMG. Purchase the premium track to earn additional rewards including the Seth Rogen Operator.

Get explosive with the 7.62 Mini-Rocket Conversion for the Goblin Mk2 along with other Free Track rewards like the 'Casual Ops' Operator Skin for Stone, plus a unique Spray, Weapon Charm, Sticker, a Loading Screen and Emblem featuring Seth Rogen, and a one-hour Double Battle Pass XP token."

Barring the controversial nature of Seth Rogen, the addition of a comedian and a bunch of devil's cabbage-themed paraphernalia to what was once a lifelike 18+ simulator of military conflicts – known for portraying the pain, intensity, and emotional weight of warfare – has been seen by many as a slap in the face, with nearly all of the comments and quote retweets on the announcement post being overwhelmingly negative.

Despite only having two lines of text and an image, the Twitter post about Seth Rogen's upcoming addition gave everyone something to criticize. Some took issue with the phrase "extremely giggly" being used to describe anything associated with Call of Duty, many others slammed Activision specifically for choosing this particular actor, and a number of fans called out the studio's hypocrisy – promoting kush while also trying to make the game more kid-friendly by forcing players to sign an EULA promising not to say offensive words over voice chat.

The bulk of the backlash, unsurprisingly, centers on the franchise's continued departure from its serious roots in favor of aping the lighthearted, whimsical tone of games like Overwatch and Fortnite – a shift that, for longtime fans, feels like a betrayal of what COD used to be.
