Capcom Wants to See More of Its AAA Games on Smartphones

It has big plans for the Indian market.

Capcom is expanding its influence on the mobile market: the company's COO Haruhiro Tsujimoto has told Bloomberg that it wants to achieve the goal of selling 100 million copies of its titles in a year by releasing more AAA games on smartphones.

“While we continue to use PC as our main platform, I hope to achieve our 100 million copies goal with contribution from AAA-type titles on smartphones,” he commented.

Capcom wanted to explore mobile opportunities earlier, but the technology "were not able to meet that requirement." Now this is not the case as Resident Evil Village and other games can be played on an iPhone 15 Pro Max with no issue. The phone can even be used as a replacement for a console.

To continue growing in the long term, the company is aiming for the Indian market, which is more interesting to it than China.

“The market in India will grow exponentially in 5 to 10 years, as college students who enjoy games grow older and the economy develops,” Tsujimoto said. “India’s population has already surpassed China’s. Taking that into consideration, we can expect to do better there than in China.”

For now, Capcom sells only about 100,000 game copies a year in India but it wishes to reach two million units annually within the decade. To do this, the company will share its licenses with others, as it did with Monster Hunter Now developed by Pokémon Go maker Niantic.

Meanwhile, we are waiting for Resident Evil Village to come out on iPhone 15 Pro and iPad in October.
