A 3D Artist, Hongyue Zhang, has shared a tutorial for creating CG characters.
This 5-hour tutorial, prepared by Hongyue Zhang, covers several techniques and workflows for creating CG characters. The main focus will be on the face mesh and fold mesh. The mentor will guide you through the details of recreating realistic facial expressions and materials. Also, you'll learn more about complex sculpting of folds, as well as lighting and rendering techniques in Marmoset Toolbag 4. Hongyue notes that to apply for this course the artist should have basic knowledge of 3ds Max, ZBrush, and Adobe Substance 3D Painter.
The course is divided into 2 parts: theoretical and practical. Firstly, the mentor will guide you through the essential techniques of visual development of oil painting style, and the production process of CG characters.
The core topics from the first part of the tutorial:
- ZBrush high poly models
- Skin Texture
- Topology and low poly models
- Facial features
- Folds sculpting
During the second part of the tutorial, you will dive deep into the model creation process, using the Girl with a Pearl Earring as a reference. The mentor will show you a step-by-step workflow for lighting, rendering, creating oil painting textures, and composing the scenes.
The process of artwork creation:
- Model sculpting: the pleats and folds will be completely made in ZBrush. The earrings and bubble tea part will be modeled in 3ds Max
- Material mappings creating: the mentor will explain to you how to draw the facial skin and highlight the features, how to express the stroke texture of oil painting on the clothes, and how to deal with details of bubble tea
- Lighting and rendering: the tutor will share the cutting-edge techniques for creating more realistic models in Marmoset Toolbag. You will learn how to express skin, eyeballs, and bubble tea with SSS material.
