Chad Stahelski Wants Ghost of Tsushima Movie to Be in Japanese

The director shared that he would like to film Ghost of Tsushima with "a complete Japanese cast, in Japanese."

A film based on Sucker Punch's Ghost of Tsushima, being developed by John Wick director Chad Stahelski, was announced more than a year ago. And while many fans have been eager to learn more about the movie ever since, almost nothing has been known about it except Stahelski's desire to "do it right" with the adaptation.

Previously, the director said that the production team is working closely with the game developers "to make sure [they] stick to what's great about [the game]." And recently, Stahelski revealed his plan to film the movie in Japanese saying that if the team "did this right, it would be visually stunning."

Speaking to Collider, the director shared that he would like to have a "complete Japanese cast" and make the movie in Japanese to make it as authentic as possible. He also revealed that Sony is "so on board with backing [the team] on that."

"We'd to try to do it, all in character. Meaning, it's a Japanese thing about the Mongols invading Tsushima island. A complete Japanese cast, in Japanese,"  Stahelski said. "I've been going to Japan since I was 16. I have a love of the country, love of the people, love of the language. To try to direct not only in my language, but someone else's and culturally shift my mindset to bring apart that in a cool way that still entices a Western audience."

Answering the reporter's question about whether a movie filmed in a foreign language that would require subtitles would attract a Western audience, Stahelski acknowledged that it may become a challenge saying that he had thought about this a lot.

He noted that Western audiences are getting more and more used to watching films or shows with subtitles thanks to Netflix's influence, for example, and, while there is a chance that subtitles can discourage people to watch the film in movie theaters, he still believes he could make people go to theaters if all the other aspects of a movie are done perfectly.

"I think it could hurt me or hurt the property if you're failing a little less in each – visually it's not great, the action is okay, the story is not clear," he said. "Look, if I nail all the other bits, I think I can inspire you enough to get in the car and go to the theater."
