Engineers have added ChatGPT AI to Boston Dynamics' robot dog Spot to enhance data processing during missions.
As artificial intelligence and robots continue to gain prominence in our world, it is fascinating to witness engineers constantly pushing the limits and discovering innovative approaches to enhance the functionality of these machines.
Most recently, a machine-learning engineer Santiago has incorporated the ChatGPT artificial intelligence into Boston Dynamics' robotic dog, Spot, resulting in an experimental device that can be seen as both cute and useful and also as a slightly unsettling step towards a dystopian future.
Santiago stated that this development is aimed at improving the processing of the raw data collected by these robots during their missions. He explained that machines undertake missions on a daily basis, and by utilizing ChatGPT, engineers can now efficiently retrieve information from these operations.
"At the end of each mission, the robots capture a ton of data. There's no simple way to query all of it on demand. That's where ChatGPT comes in," Santiago wrote. "We show it the configuration files and the mission results. We then ask questions using that context. Put that together with a voice-enabled interface, and we have an awesome way to query our data!"
According to the engineer, by integrating ChatGPT into the robot's system, it becomes possible to easily ask questions about past and future missions and receive real-time responses as ChatGPT interprets the questions asked, analyzes the relevant files, and generates appropriate answers for the engineers.
Certainly, this integration was not a straightforward process of just installing ChatGPT into the robot and achieving instant results. Santiago's video showcases the journey that the engineers had to undertake in order to incorporate these new systems. Specifically, the video depicts the engineers manually adding specific terms to Spot's dictionary to ensure the retrieval of relevant information.
The final outcome is remarkable since Spot, when combined with Google's text-to-speech feature, can now provide crucial feedback and execute commands. As a result, it can efficiently convey the necessary information that the team needs from its daily missions.
