Game developers use all kinds of tricks, from scary to funny, to stop players from going past the edge of the map.
Indie developer katemaya33 shared a hilarious in-game sign that appears when a player tries to leave the map – an area the developers haven't built beyond. The creator asks for a piece of advice on whether they should implement such an idea in their upcoming life sim, Toll Booth Simulator: Schedule of Chaos.
Such a sign looks amusing, but it will definitely encourage users to find it and check whether what it says is true, as the urge to reach the end of a game map can be impressively strong. Thus, a Minecraft streamer Kurt J. Mac, known for his let's play series "Far Lands or Bust," spent 14.5 years on reaching the Minecraft Far Lands, a glitched place in the game where the procedurally generated world stops generating itself, and demonstrated the fascinating blocky "end of the world" in one of his streams:

One of the most creative examples of limiting the players' curiosity and preventing them from leaving the map appears in Grand Theft Auto 5, where players found themselves in an endless ocean with dreadful sharks appearing once in a while:
Another great example is Subnautica's Ghost Leviathan, which guards the map's edge and poses an unbeatable obstacle for players:
Much like Minecraft’s Far Lands, Mad Max thrusts players into a metaphorical, thought-provoking realm, The Big Nothing, a vast, desolate wasteland that captures the impression of how the world's end might look. This uncharted area has dangers such as perilous weather, deadly sandstorms, and a complete absence of water or food:
However, a far more frightening map boundary appears in Sea of Thieves, where players find themselves sailing the Red Sea, also known as the Blood Sea or Devil's Shroud. The entire voyage becomes chilling, as eerie music starts playing and the waters turn red. The deadly waves destroy the ship, and it sinks to the very bottom:
The world boundary in 1998 Motocross Madness 2, a racing game set across diverse landscapes, still remains one of the most hilarious and fan-favorite. Players who reached the edge of the map didn't simply stop, but they were catapulted backward in a burst of chaotic energy:
