Check Out This Beautiful Painting-Like 3D Water Scene from Atonement

A fine animation by Apolline Royer.

Enjoy Apolline Royer's cinematic yet painterly animation, a 3D recreation of a scene from the Atonement movie.

The hand touching the water surface looks gentle and alive, and it's hard to believe this was made in 3D, using Blender and Maya.

"And if this wasn't enough, I also wanted to use Blender for the first time in a personal project. Which was honestly quite challenging at the beginning, like, why are the XYZ axis not in the same orientation as every other 3D software??? But Blender really has its advantages, and the use of modifiers is really one of them: here the water surface is just deformed with a displace and some waves modifiers, and it does the trick!"

Royer wanted to create variations in the shaders, so she baked 3 different versions of diffuse, roughness, and normal maps for each main object, looped those textures, and made an outline shader to achieve this sketch-like look.

"Once the lighting made and my image rendered, I still found that it was lacking something. While looking for options in compositing, I found an amazing tutorial made by The Foundry to create brushstrokes in NukeX! I think it really does the trick and add an interesting layer to the image. The last tweak was to reduce the frame rate to 12 (rendered in 24fps originally) to add a stop motion look to the final scene."
