Check Out This Short Film with Retro Game Style Recreated in Real Life
In Your Way Out, actors move like NPCs, wear lycra masks and painted costumes, and the lighting has no shadows.
This impressive short film titled Your Way Out, shared on the YouTube channel of Coinbase and launched at the Oscars, tells an inspiring story of a character breaking out of a system from a low-poly PS1-like world to real life. What makes the project unique is that the old-school effect was crafted not using computer graphics, but real-life practical effects.
In the film, directed by Oscar Hudson, the artists move like NPCs in retro games, wear masks to look like low-poly characters, and the interface elements are also crafted using real-life materials, while the environments feature lighting without any shadows to complement the PS1-inspired style.
Director Oscar Hudson has shared some details about crafting the impressive scenes:
"Nearly everything on screen here was made by hand and performed by real people. Low-res set design. Printed 2d wardrobe. Actors wearing lycra masks of their own faces. Miniature sets mixed with 75m long ones. Even the triangle was a physical puppeteered object where possible."
