Check Out This Victorian Dress 3D Gaussian Splat

"That velvet sheen is something impossible to capture using other methods."

The concept of using 3D Gaussian Splatting for history preservation isn't exactly new: earlier, we shared Azad Balabanian's 3DGS of his old Toyota 4Runner, which was created with the hope of revisiting it in VR someday. Thomas Flynn, however, is a seasoned professional working in the field of cultural heritage, specializing in 3D digitization, online publishing, open access, storytelling, and interoperability.

This period dress, captured by the artist simply for fun, serves as a great example of what's possible in terms of digitizing costumes and fashion. With 224 images taken on the iPhone 15 Pro run through RealityCapture, Thomas Flynn completed the process with Jawset's Postshot. Take a closer look at the dress:
