China's Mobile Games Market Fell by 19% in Q3 2022

Mobile game sales, the number of active users, and hours spent playing decreased significantly and spending power has weakened as well.

The Chinese mobile games market has fallen to its lowest levels since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the third quarter of 2022, the revenue generated by mobile games amounted to 59.7 billion yuan (around $8.3 billion). This figure reflects a 19.1% decline from the same period in the previous year and a 12.6% drop from the previous quarter.

According to the report from South China Morning Post, which cites the Chinese video gaming intelligence firm CNG, the downturn may be attributed to significantly lower sales of mobile games compared to Q3 2021. Mobile game sales in the country fell by nearly 25% to 41.6 billion yuan (about $5.8 billion) due to "the impact of the macro economy", the intelligence firm reported.

CNG noted that the number of active users and hours spent playing as well as spending capabilities decreased substantially and added that the popularity of mobile games released this year was significantly inferior to the popularity of games released in 2021.

In addition, as South China Morning Post reports, the number of mobile games that were shut down during the period increased by 89%.

The weaker performance of the Chinese video gaming market may also be attributed to the limitation of the time and money minors can spend on online games as well as restrictions related to game licensing in the country China's government implemented.
