The game's playable area is set to be "roughly five times bigger than in Cities: Skylines".
Cities: Skylines developer Colossal Order continues its weekly development diary series dedicated to the upcoming city builder simulator Cities: Skylines II, set to be launched on October 24, 2023. The new part, titled "Maps & Themes", provides an overview of the soon-to-be-released title's playable maps and their sizes and compares the size of the sequel's playable area to that of the original game.
According to the developers, Cities: Skylines II's map will be an impressive five times larger than that of Cities: Skylines, boasting an expansive area of 159km². To put this into perspective, the playable area of the sequel is roughly equivalent in size to the real-life country of Liechtenstein. In contrast, the original game's total playable area is 92.16km², with a maximum city-building space of 33.18km².
Additionally, in the sequel, the Map Tiles do not need to be connected to each other, allowing players to create small isolated pocket towns and experiment with diverse layouts. Moreover, the map's height limit has been raised, providing players with even more possibilities to craft unique and intricate cityscapes.
The diary also explores the new game's Themes, explaining what these are and how they differ from Themes from the original Cities: Skylines:
"In Cities: Skylines [Themes] controlled the natural environment of a map, with predefined settings for each theme," reads the post. "When we talk about Themes in Cities: Skylines II, we are talking about the style of roads and buildings, with the options of European and North American themes being selectable when you start a new map."
