Cloud Imperium Games' Squadron 42 Might Be Heading to Consoles

The latest job openings posted by the Star Citizen developer suggest that Squadron 42 will be multi-platform.

Cloud Imperium Games, the developer behind "the most expensive indie game of all time," Star Citizen, and the single-player adventure set in the same universe, Squadron 42, has shared a couple of new job listings hinting that the latter might also be heading to consoles.

CIG

First spotted by Reddit user AngieK22, the openings are listed for CIG’s UK and Frankfurt offices and are looking for a Cinematic Animator to work on Squadron 42. The most intriguing part in our case is the list of requirements for candidates, which begins by stating that applicants must have "professional experience in game animation development, ideally on current/next-gen consoles," all but confirming the title to be multi-platform.

With both Star Citizen and SQ42 promising – should they actually ever release – to be larger-than-life games comparable in quality to massive industry juggernauts, the reveal left many scratching their heads about how Cloud Imperium plans to port Squadron 42 to consoles and optimize it for playability there, with some half-joking that the game will only be ported to future-gen consoles rumored to arrive by September 2027.

Other requirements listed in the job descriptions include the ability to quickly adapt to new pipelines and tools, experience with Maya, MotionBuilder, and similar software, the skill to create fluid, smooth, and realistic animations demonstrating strong animation fundamentals, and the ability to identify technical and developmental risks and challenges. If this sounds like something you're proficient in, you can try applying yourself here and here.

Recently, Cloud Imperium Games faced backlash from fans who criticized the studio for adding a "pay-to-win" feature to Star Citizen that could only be purchased with real money – a move many players found insulting, especially considering the game has already raised over $833 million in funding at the time of writing.
