Console Sales in the UK Grew by 41% in September

The latest GfK and GSD data reveal that the UK games market saw significant growth in console sales in September compared with the previous months, however, the overall sector was still down compared to the same period in 2021.

The latest data from GfK (accessories and consoles) and GSD (physical and digital games) reveal that the UK games market saw significant growth in console sales last month, however, the overall sector was still down compared to the previous year.

According to the data, over 176,000 consoles were sold in September 2022 which is 41% more than console sales in August.

PlayStation 5 was the leader in terms of units sold during the month with its sales growing by 9% from August. The second best-selling console in the country is Xbox Series X|S which saw an impressive 104% jump in sales compared with August, and third place is taken by Nintendo Switch whose sales also saw growth in September – they increased by 44% compared with August.

Year-to-date console sales in the UK, however, are still down 35.5% compared to the same period last year.

The data also reveals that nearly 735,000 accessories and add-on products were sold in the UK during September. This figure represents a 34% growth compared with August, although it is nearly 8% compared with September 2021. The best-selling accessory is the PS5 DualSense controller, followed by the Xbox Wireless Shock Blue controller.

As for software sales, the data reveals that 3.17 million games were sold in the UK in September which reflects an 83% increase compared with August. However, this figure is 6% less than the number of games sold over the same period in 2021.

The majority of game sales came from digital stores (2.2 million) and the remaining 957,000 were boxed games. FIFA 23 was the best-selling game in the country – its sales made up over a third of all games sold in the UK in September.
